Borderlands 4 marks the first collaboration between Materia and Gearbox. We joined the project in its closing phase, when many elements were being brought together for the final release. Our main contribution was the creation of the title card images — a long-standing hallmark of the Borderlands franchise — followed by illustrations for the end-credit sequence and type design for the intro cinematics.

TITLE CARDS
The title cards combine 3D character renders with 2D painted elements such as backgrounds, typography, and framing. Achieving the right balance required close coordination with Gearbox’s cinematics team.Working from unlit, untextured, but fully posed character renderings, we developed the paintovers, adjusted poses where needed, and established lighting setups that supported the overall design and mood of each card.

END CREDIT ILLUSTRATIONS
The end-credit illustrations were created by five artists from our roster, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in comic book art and pencil illustration. While each artist brought their own sensibilities to the work, we paid close attention to maintaining a consistent overall look and feel across all pieces.
